Dominica
Association of Disabled People
The
Dominica Association of Disabled
People (D.A.D.P.) is a
national cross-disability
consumer self-help organization
established on October 26 1983.
Its mission is: to promote and
Protect the Human Rights and
Dignity of persons with
Disabilities and foster their
Full and Active Participation,
Integration and Inclusion in
Social Life and National
Development.
It is a non-profit organization
registered under the Company’s
Ordinance, Act 318 of the laws
of the Commonwealth of
Dominica.
The Association’s public
education and advocacy
programme, addresses the
educational,economic,
environmental, architectural,
and social needs of its
constituents.
It highlights the barriers which
these structures and conditions
create, advocating for and
all-inclusive’ society.
Most of its work for the first
five years was carried out under
extreme difficulties , since
resources were not readily
available, and it had to rely
on in-kind contributions,
volunteerism, and accessing the
public means of transportation.
In nineteen eighty–seven (1987),
the Association opened a small
office in Roseau, where it was
able to undertake a more
organized and structured form of
programming.
Funds for doing so were acquired
from international donor
agencies including Christian Aid
and Oxfam Canada.
DADP is managed by a seven
member Executive Committee and a
full time Staff of four.
It has trained numerous persons
with disabilities in
leadership, and other marketable
skills and organized short-term
programmes including: Braille,
Sign Language, Information and
Communication Technology.
It began a “Cricket for the
Blind” programme in 2006 and
together with the St. Lucia
Blind Welfare Association
established a Windward Islands
Blind Cricket team.
Over the last five years, the
profile of the Association has
grown because of the intensity
of its programming, brought
about primarily as a result of
it having established its own
facility.
This is located on Canal Lane,
Goodwill and built with grant
funds acquired from the European
Union, Caribbean Development
Bank and the Government of
Dominica.
DADP is funded through grand
funds, donations, special events
which it organizes and an annual
Government Subvention .
This year marks the Twenty-fifth
Anniversary of the organization
and a number of events are
being organized to commemorate

Twenty
five years of advocacy and
awareness raising, focusing
on Education,Training,
Employment, Access to the
Physical Environment and Public
Buildings, Health, and many
other social and human rights
issues have caused society to
change its perception of,
attitude and mentality towards
persons with disabilities to the
point where we are eagerly
awaiting the ratification of the
United Nations Convention on
the Rights of Persons with
Disabilities by our Government.
