Lyrical prowess, a unique style
and a 'mystic' flow are just
some of the qualities that any
listener to Skinny Banton's
music can attest to him having.
Born Wayne Robinson, December
19, 1977, Skinny grew up a child
prodigy in the Commonwealth of
Dominica displaying musical
talent from an early age. The
oldest of five siblings, this
young artist knew that music was
in his destiny when he first
heard Jamaican dance hall music
and fell in love with the sound
scheme and beat composition. He
tried to emulate the rhyming
style and began composing songs
which he sent to local record
companies and undiscovered music
producers. Initially receiving
some disapproval from family
members, he frequented the hot
spots in “Harlem” better known
as Newtown and was introduced to
some reggae artists trying to
create a buzz. This he
attributed as his early
motivators who encouraged him to
pursue music after being
impressed by a song he had
written. His real debut came at
age sixteen when he performed at
the African Liberation Day
celebrations in front of large
audience. The reaction of the
crowd reaffirmed his decision to
pursue music and served as a
motivator for future events. He
then helped form the
Klockerz
crew in 1995, a entertainment
group consisting of young
artists looking to be heard in
the music industry. After making
a name for themselves, Skinny's
unique rhyming style caught the
attention of local popular band,
the
W.C.K. who immediately
wanted the opportunity to work
with a new artist and explore
different genres. Skinny's music
career then got the boost it
needed and after having a
successful run with the band he
partnered with fellow band mate,
Neijel “Nayee”
Jno Baptiste to form the music
dynamic duo
Nayee and Skinny. The two
exploded on the music scene
releasing their first album
“Bring It” in 2004 and then
later “Solid” in 2007 gathering
a wave of fans and establishing
their independence from their
former band mates.
Continuing his rise to stardom,
Skinny is also focusing on other
aspects of his life. He combined
his love of visual artists and
eager business sense to form his
own graphic design and tatooing
company, Nubian Ink. His
music,however; is his first
priority and as an artist
versatility now seems to be his
focus. Having tried many music
genres Skinny is ready for the
next step in his evolution as an
artist. Although, reggae dance
hall will always be his first
love, this microphone maestro is
ready challenge himself and
deliver something new to his
devoted fans. Skinny is indeed a
force to be reckoned with and an
act to watch out for in the near
future.
