Royalty Band

Royalty Band was formed in
Irvington, New Jersey where they
retain their home base. The
founders and original band
members – Rigel “Bolo” John,
Kenrick “Boogie” Boston, Flodi
“Worm” Challenger, and Gregory
“Kapales” Andrews – four friends
from the island of Dominica,
established Royalty Band in
their bedrooms and basements as
an attempt to continue the
musical traditions of their
nature isle while having fun and
entertaining friends and family.
As demands for their
performances grew beyond their
immediate circle, Royalty
increased the quality of their
sound, which quickly transformed
them into a local musical
phenomenon. Today the band
includes seven members who all
hail from the island of
Dominica, continuing the culture
of their musically diverse
country that introduced the
musical genres of Cadence and
Bouyon to the world. Although
Royalty Band’s music is heavily
inspired by their Dominican
heritage and demand from
Dominican audiences, musical
influences from Antigua,
Trinidad, St. Kitts and Jamaica
reverberate in their pulsating
rhythms.
For three consecutive years,
Royalty Band performed at the
Jersey City Carnival and the NY
Creole Expo. They livened up the
after party scene during the
East Orange Carnival in New
Jersey and Labor Day Carnival in
Brooklyn, New York. In 2005,
they performed at Wet Fete
in Dominica as well as
Dominica’s Carnival. They
traveled to Tortola and St.
Thomas to deliver stunning
performances, while maintaining
their US presence on stages in
Boston, Connecticut and
Washington D.C. Amidst their
growing popularity, the band
struggled through countless
challenges, losing and gaining
members throughout the years.
Yet their endurance led them to
their two greatest
accomplishments yet - playing on
the opening night of Dominica’s
World Creole Music Festival,
opening for acts such as T-Vice,
W.C.K.
Band and Shaggy and releasing
their debut album in the same
year.
With the release of their long
awaited 2006 debut album–
Music Cyan Stop –
Royalty Band solidified their presence
on the Caribbean-American music
scene. By combining a cornucopia
of island beats from Soca and
Zouk to Bouyon and Compa,
Royalty Band burst onto the
dancehalls of New York City,
Toronto and the Caribbean five
years ago giving audiences a
unique musical blend unmatched
by other local bands. Royalty’s
creative island style took them
from gigs at local clubs to
sharing the stage with musical
heavyweights Tabou Combo, Wyclef
Jean and Shaggy.
Tracks such as "Wine on me",
"Music cyan stop", "Saudering",
or Sewo on the Music Cyan
Stop album makes it apparent why
Royalty Band is quickly becoming
a household name. One
only has to hear one of
Royalty’s many hits such as:
"So the massive like it",
"Pound Iron", or "Celebrate",
to realize that this powerful
band is on the way to higher
heights. Royalty Band is
currently working on their
second album and continue to
play at venues in the US and
Caribbean.
